Parenting classes for pregnancy through the child's third year, presenting practices based on Rudolf Steiner's picture of the developing human being.
In the first three year's a child develops of herself, as if by a miracle, the three fundamental capacities of being human: to walk upright, to talk, and to call herself “I.” Steiner's deep insight into the process by which the soul gradually incarnates in the earthly body engenders a sacred awe for the task of caring for a young child.
Striving to counteract the fast-pace mentality of today, these parent-child classes support parents in protecting this awe-inspiring process and in creating a nurturing and rhythmical environment for their children.
Through quiet observation of the child's sensory awareness and movement impulses, parents deepen their own intuitive knowledge and discover new ways of being with their child.
The classes cover topics such as motor development, care and protection of the senses, rhythms and routines, sleep questions, health and nutrition.
Many of the difficult questions that face parents today are explored in a spirit of inquiry and mutual respect, so that individual choice and shared experience find a place side by side. Thus, rather than subscribing to yet another set of parenting rules, parents create a true community of values by becoming ever more conscious of their calling.
Classes for children ages 2¾ to 4½ emphasizing imaginative play and the joyful imitation of real domestic work.
With his newly found sense of self, the preschool aged child is ready to explore a “wider world” between the home and the immediate community.
As the feeling life grows and expands, each day fills with new attractions, yet the young soul cannot by himself navigate safely amidst his own overwhelming likes and dislikes. The familiarity of his daily and weekly routines form the vessel that holds a child between the anticipation of every little joy and protection from life's little sorrows. A strong rhythm, alternating between times of activity and times of rest, will carry him joyfully through the preschool day.
Honoring the need of the preschool aged child to find security in the familiarity of the home setting, this program seeks to offer a social experience in the Waldorf tradition of a beautiful, homelike environment. While “visiting Heidi, “ little friends happily join together in real domestic work activities like bread- and soup-making, washing and ironing, as well as singing, painting and free imaginative play.
Held in the new San Francisco Waldorf Family Center at 3105 Sacramento Street , these classes give children a meaningful social experience, while giving their parents a needed and well-deserved break.
